What a senior engineer
actually costs in 2026.
Every number below is linked to its source. Where a competitor is genuinely better than us, we say so — you will find that out anyway, and we would rather you found it here.
Blended hourly rate; minimum weekly commitments vary by engineer.
$500 refundable deposit + $79/month subscription.
Quote-only. The engineer's pay and the platform margin are bundled into one number that is not broken out.
2026 reviews estimate Turing retains 50–55% of every invoice.
12-month minimum engagement, custom quote required.
$50,000 fee to convert an engineer to your own full-time hire.
Permanent headcount. Fully loaded cost of $250,000–$300,000/year including payroll taxes, benefits, 401(k), PTO, equipment and overhead.
Recruiter fees of 20–30% of first-year salary — $35,000–$52,500 on a $175,000 base.
Varies by region — Asia $40–55/hr, Latin America $52–70/hr, Eastern Europe $60–82/hr.
All-in cost typically runs 30–45% above the base rate once coordination and QA overhead are counted.
Full-time, one senior engineer, per month. None of these vendors publish a per-engineer rate card, so these are ranges reported by third-party 2026 pricing roundups, linked above and retrieved September 2026. If you think a figure here is wrong, email hello@sdl.engineering and we'll correct it.
Three SDL engineers cost less than one Toptal engineer.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best Toptal alternative in 2026?
It depends on what is binding. If cost is the constraint, SDL Engineering publishes $3,000 per engineer per month against roughly $17,600–$29,000 for a comparable Toptal engagement. If you need a niche stack staffed within days, Toptal's bench depth is genuinely hard to match.
How much does it cost to hire a senior software engineer in 2026?
Roughly $17,600–$29,000 per month through Toptal, $17,000–$35,000 through Turing, $12,000–$14,000 through Andela, and $20,800–$25,000 fully loaded for a US in-house hire before recruiter fees. Typical offshore staff augmentation runs $6,400–$12,800. SDL Engineering is $3,000, or $2,500 at three or more engineers.
Which engineering vendors publish their pricing publicly?
Very few. Toptal and Turing are quote-only, and Andela publishes only a wide band and requires a custom quote. SDL publishes the actual per-engineer monthly rate on its pricing page.
What is the catch with a $3,000/month engineer?
There isn't a hidden one, but there are real trade-offs. We are a smaller company than Toptal or Andela, so our bench is shallower on niche specializations and we cannot ramp fifteen engineers in a month. We are also the wrong fit for genuinely short engagements. What we do offer is a published price, month-to-month terms, and a platform that lets you verify the work rather than trust a status report.
